Do You Need a Hearing Test?

While the public perception is that issues with hearing are only a problem for the over sixties, hearing loss can affect people of all ages. In fact, everyone is advised to have a hearing test at least every couple of years once they reach the age of forty, instead of leaving these vital check-ups until they reach an older age. Hearing tests are a normal part of checking your health. If you are unsure whether or not you should book yourself a hearing test, think about whether any of the following statements apply to you.

Friends and family find your TV and radio volume too loud.
If you find that people often comment on the volume you normally set your TV or radio to, this can indicate that the volume you need to hear sounds and music is higher than that needed by others.

You ask people to repeat what they have said so that you can hear them clearly.
Sometimes your hearing problems show themselves not by voices sounding muffled, but by people sounding quiet, even in normal conversation. If you find yourself asking people to repeat themselves, you may want to have a hearing test to see if you are beginning to develop a hearing loss.

Sometimes voices sound distorted and muffled.
Hearing loss can often be more obvious when you are speaking over the phone. If voices sound muffled on the phone, you may have a problem with your hearing. You may find some people's voices more difficult to hear than others - this can be another early sign of hearing problems.

Noisy and busy areas make it difficult to hear conversations.
If you find it difficult to carry on a conversation when there is a lot of background noise, this may be a sign of problems with your hearing. A hearing test could help find the source of this problem.

You may think that these are obvious ideas, but hearing loss and problems can often creep up on you, so that you don't realise you have a problem with your hearing until it has become more serious. A hearing test can let you know whether you have a hearing loss. Also, problems can then be dealt with early-on and simple issues such an ear infection or an accumulation of ear-wax can be resolved easily.
